A magnificently presented, "user friendly" primer.
Patricia Nelson's Stylish Sewing presents techniques for quilted and embellished clothing. Sixteen projects are outlined in a title which tells how to embellish off-the-rack clothing for enhanced flair.

A machine quilter's dream
Terrific first book by this lady. She's done a nice job of sharing the techniques she's used to win national competitions and excite people she's taught all over the country. But perhaps I don't have perspective... I'm married to her and lived through the creative process! If you're into machine quilting or myriads of other embellishment techniques, take a look and add your comments!

Super Friends!

Up, Up, and Away!
This collection of Super Friends stories by E. Nelson Bridwell, Ramona Fradon, and Ric Estrada is a blast from start to finish! Solid super-hero stories without the angst of the modern anti-hero movement. Awesome stuff! Even better than the TV series that inspired it! This is a nice companion to DC Comics' The Batman Adventures and Justice League Adventures--some issues of which have been collected in the trade paperback format.

Superfriends Forever!!!
This book includes entire issues of the comic book series with additional info written by the original writers of the comics.
A fascinating journey back in time to many of our youths. This book is a must have for all DC Comics superhero fans.

There's a Hole in My Sidewalk: The Romance of Self-Discovery

Incredible habit-changing story.
Being creatures of habit, human beings often have downfalls and pieces of themselves that inhibit them that they would like to change. This short book really helps with a wonderful analogy to show in plain terms what it is we do when we are forced into a habit. This has helped a few people I know, and it has helped me tremendously to help me turn around and practice my Christian faith, not just preach it. Whatever piece of you it is that you want to get rid of or change, reading this will definately be helpful.

Great book for expressing the emotions you can't....
This is something I have given to many I have dated. It talks in a sweet poinent way about how we feel when we fall for that special someone.

They Glorified Mary...We Glorified Rice: A Catholic-Lutheran Lexicon

They Glorified Mary...We Glorified Rice: A Catholic-Lutheran
For anyone who has grown up in the Upper Midwest during the mid-20th century this book presents, in short form, all the things you heard as you were growing up - Lutheran or Catholic. "Ya know, ya gotta watch out for those Lutheran/Catholic kids...they think different 'cause their church is done in Latin." What a hoot! Martin and Nelson have captured the essence of growing up Lutheran in North Dakota or Minnesota!

Ave Uff-da!
I was amazed, when I went to this page to get the ASIN # as I was preparing my "Pretty Good" Minnesota Fare list - "Pretty good" meaning real good in Minnesota speak - that this book had not been reviewed at all. Let me remedy that here and now.

For those uninitiated to Scandinavian-American Cuisine (I belong to those who glorify Mary but am familiar with the Lutifisk/Lefse/Rice crowd by geographical, social, and political proximity. See also "Cream Peas on Toast" by the same authors,) Glorified Rice is jello-ed, fruited rice - the recipe for which is helpfully found on page 84. When I first saw the review of this book in the Sunday Fargo Forum (1994), I rushed right out to my local bookstore and got one. (Which was a feat in itself, as North Dakota had only relatively recently repealed the "Blue Laws" mandating that all non-food stores be closed on Sundays so as to encourage employers, employees, and the general populace to sit around all day glorifying rice and God or at least not doing anything "heathen" like going to K-Mart to pick up cleaning supplies.)

The gist of this hilarious and thought-provoking series is that 2 American Norwegian Lutheran farm women got together and "it dawned on us that the world needed us to write a few little books comparing and contrasting such things as Lutheran and Catholic ways, ... and all the baggage and trappings that go with these kinds of things."

Here are some of their "findings":

"They had fish frys...We had Lutefisk suppers

They had Patron Saints... we basically fended for ourselves.

They believe in the infallibility of the Pope...We believe everyone has a few bad days now and then.

They had the shroud of Turin ... We had old bathrobes for wisemen, old sheets for Mary and Joseph, gunny sacks with rope belts for the shepherds in the Christmas play, and other miscellaneous swaddling clothes.

They had miracles...We had Miracle Whip

They danced...We couldn't risk getting that close

They worked on Sundays...We napped on Sundays. They worked in the fields on Sundays... We drove around and looked at the fields on Sundays

They sold indulgences... We sold church anniversary cookbooks and centennial plates.

They had cardinals who wore red hats for investiture ... we wore red hats for deerhunting

They went to St. Paul, MN ... we went to Minneapolis, MN."

Absolute best first Bible
I was so sad when this book went out of print. I have used it for my three children and look forward to using it for my fourth. My oldest child quit using it when he was four, but then started again when he began reading at age 6. My 5 year old daughter reads it to my toddler. It is the best for scripture memory and identifying with Jesus! I started reading it to each of my children at about 4 months, sitting with them a few times a day and also using it during changing table times. I have bought many copies for new mothers and wish it would come back into print.

EASY-TO-LEARN BIBLE VERSES/Great pictures for children
This is an excellent first bible for children. The bible verses are easy to remember, with the colorful pictures-and stories relating the verses to every day life. Watch your child gleam, when they recite the verses, by looking at the pictures. A MUST for your children's library.

A Must-Read/Do for Those Seeking to Resolve Their Own Issues
If you've been a self-help junkie who has read and tried everything, attended every seminar, etc., and still looking for answers, then this is it. If you're just starting out, then you'll save yourself a TON of time and energy. This gets right to the core of what keeps us from our happiness and potential in a direct and powerful way. I'm going to send this to everyone I know. Thank you Dr. Patenaude!!

More than just a "self-help" book
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is tired of struggling with the question of how to fix what is wrong with you, and would welcome the opportunity to relax into the joy of finding out that you are already all that you need to be! Dr. Patenaude believes that everyone is capable of having a fulfilled and fulfilling life, and the key to having this fulfilled life is to find your way back to your "original self". Dr. Patenaude offers many examples of how we become trapped in old and detrimental behaviors that act to sabotage us by providing vignettes from her client base as well as referencing her own struggles toward her original self. The book is more than just explanations and advice - practical exercises have been provided to assist us in finding our way back. It's a great book, highly readable, highly effective!.

Travel on Your Own: Go Now, Here's How: An Adventure in Discovery, Solo Travel Can Be Fun
Published in Paperback by Primrose Press (April, 1994)
Author: Marilyn Nelson Clark
Average review score:

An exceptional informative travel guide!
This is the very best informative guide to travel and all the pitfalls to avoid that I have ever read. The author sticks to the pertinent and important facts, without boring the reader with a lot of unnecessary details. I would recommend this book not only to "solo" travelers, but to everyone who wants to read a good informative guide to travel.

Truly outstanding help in its important, specialized topic.
If you've ever considered traveling alone, this is certainly the book you need to help you decide--- go to! Readable, specific, informative tips---and, unusual for a travel book, this one is not padded with stories of the author's travels. Still, the author has traveled alone for years, so you can be sure her tips are practical. The book is organized in three main sections: what to do before you leave, while traveling, and upon returning. Especially valuable and useful: 8 check-off lists, including documents, toiletries and health items, gifts, general, and a form to add your own personal reminders. In sum: a truly practical, useful book!

Tutorial: Computer Graphics, Image Synthesis
Published in Hardcover by IEEE Computer Society (January, 1989)
Authors: Kenneth I. Joy, Charles W. Grant, Nelson L. Max, and Lansing Hatfield
Average review score:

Excellent reference
I keep coming back to this title where other texts like Foley and Van Dam and Angel come short. All the basic hidden surface and shading techniques from which today's architectures are derived are described in detail. Modeling techniques are left out. My only wish was that there was a more recent collection including current hardware accelerators, plus some modeling techniques like subdivision surfaces and DirectX 8's patches.

Excelent!
This is a wonderful collection of very important papers on image synthesis. It's all there: hidden surface removal, ray tracing, radiosity, texture mapping, and anti-aliasing. The annotated bibliography at the end is very helpful.

Two Little Confederates

Delightful, read in one evening.
This was a delightful fictional account of two ten year old boys' adventures and escapades while living at home in rural Virginia during the Civil War. They are delightfully innocent of modern day attitudes, and the story is sympathetic to both sides of the conflict in the sense that war is difficult for both sides involved. The relationships are heart-warming and real. The boys demonstrate budding character traits of honorable young men. Highly recommended for a Southern view of the Old South.

best southern based book ever?
this is one of the first southern prospective civil war books i have ever read and it will probebly be the best it even kept that southern voice
